Ironman Louisville Bike Course Description and Elevation
By
- I road the Ironman Louisville Bike course last weekend from the Great Lawn through loop 1 and had my ass handed to me.
It is a 85 mile ride and the back part of the loop was the worst. Below you can see my step by step description with a nice elevation chart showing approximate locations according to elevation. If you have any questions feel free to email me.

–Start at Water Front Park (The Great Lawn)
–Turn left (east) onto Witherspoon St.
(Short ride to Preston)
–Turn left (north) onto Preston St., which becomes River Rd
(about 10 miles to Wolf Pen Branch rd.)
–Veer right onto Wolf Pen Branch Rd.
(some what steep camel back climb to 42)
–Turn left (north) onto State Rd 42
(some moderate climbing to and rollers to 1694)
–Turn right (east) onto KY-1694
(Mile 20 enter 1694)
–Out and back around turn around
(the turn is about 23 miles so far and the climb back up is steep)
–Turn right (north) onto State Rd 42
(back on 42 is small rollers to 393)
–Turn right (east) onto KY-393
(slight climb up and hang on. Good 40mph down Hill speeds with some steady climbs back up to 146)
–Turn left (east) onto KY-146
(long shallow rollers to viewing area)
–Turn left (north) onto Ballard School Rd
(This is where I had my ass handed to me. Hard looooong climb about 3 miles then a short welcomed down hill to Old Sligo)
–Turn right (north) onto Old Sligo Rd
(I had my ass handed to me again!! Right turn into a very steep, maybe (45-50%) OK, more than 10% but less than 50% grade climb. Out of saddle all the way. Old Sligo is 1.6 miles with about a 8% grade over the distance. There is a short steep climb as you turn onto Old Sligo I don’t have a device to measure the incline but I will film the ride on my next loop)
–Turn right (east) onto Lesprit Parkway
(L’esprit is a long false flat to 153. sta in saddle the whole way.)
–Turn left (north) onto 153
(easy ride to 42)
-Turn Left (south) onto State Rd 42
(about mile 56 42 is mostly down hill to 393 for loop 2)
-Turn left (east) onto 393
(about mile 61)
–Turn left (east) onto KY-146
–Turn left (north) onto Ballard School Rd
–Turn right (north) onto Old Sligo Rd
–Turn right (east) onto Lesprit Parkway
–Turn left (north) onto 153
–Turn left (south) onto State Rd 42
(33 miles to Louisville. Its all down hill from here with a slight climb mid way through and at the end of 42)
–Turn right (south) onto Wolf Pen Branch Rd
(all downhill to rive road. 10 mile remaining)
–Veer left onto River Rd., which becomes Preston St
–Turn right (west) onto Witherspoon St
T2!!!

I did Louisville twice then WI last year I felt that KY was about the same overall. It’s the heat in KY that will ruin your race but that’s just my thoughts

I have to agree. The heat here in August is Africa hot. I am expecting high 80’s to mid 90’s. I can deal with the heat. Growing up and living in New Orleans I am some what used to it.

Thanks for the info! IM Louisville will be my first full IM, I have done 3 Halfs. I was worried how steep the climbing was going to be, now at least I don’t have to guess much. Time to hit bridges and loop them again, and again. I’m from Miami, so it’s all flat! =(
Can u give me any other insight, as what the water temp usually is, or the run course(is it hilly as well?)
Thanks again!!!

The only really hard part was Ballard School Road and Old Sligo. On Old Sligo there i a really tough short climb. The whole 1.6 miles of it is about 8% grade but there is a monster there as soon as you turn. Also in the very beginning at mile 10 there is a camel back climb on Wolfe Pen Branch as well.

Thank you for posting this, it is obvious that I will doing most of my long rides to include LOTS of climbs. I have to admit, its a bit scary but everytime I get unmotivated I will refer back to this and it makes me want to drop everything and go train.
Happy Training,

Damon I am happy to see that I can motivate you…I will say that the ride never lets up until you hit river road and it flattens out. Keep climbing.

I rode 50 miles of the course last weekend. Sooooo glad to hear that someone else thought that Ballard School Road and Old Sligo were the worst part!! I thought I’d NEVER get out of those sections! The out and back was nothing, compared to these two sections! Just called my local bike shop technician, and am scheduled for a new cassette switch out this Friday! 11/28 on my Specialized Transition Comp!

Same here! I road one loop yesterday and it was better but, that 13% grade on Old Sligo kills and Ballard School just does not give in! I will be on that section every weekend. I am planning two loops this coming weekend if you would like to join me.
Did you ride with the Land Shark group on Saturday?

Wish I could ride with you this weekend, but I’m from northern Indiana, so won’t be riding again for a few weeks. I rode with iamtri group last Saturday. There may have been some Land Sharks out there, I don’t know.
So, Old Sligo is 13%? I think that’s the road that I was cranking 4 mph on! Honestly, thought I was either a) going to tip over, b) start going backwards!!!
Good luck with the course ride this weekend! We are riding again, June 12th, with sag support. If you are riding solo and would rather ride with a group and sag support, go to iamtri, sign up for the L’Ville 2010 group. It’s free, lots of good advice, comraderie, and you can ride with a lot of others! We are also doing an OW swim June 12th, before the ride.

The entire 1.6 miles that we are on Old Sligo it is a 8% grade total. That really steep hill right as you trun off Ballard School is only 13%. It feels like 40%!
That whole section at Ballard School Road and Old Sligo is the hardest part bar none. It is also the slowest section as well.

So there is a 1.6 mile climb @ 8%? Do we do it twice or just once?
I am from the Bay Area California so have trained a bit on rolling hills. I’m more worried about the damn heat. We have had the coldest and longest winter in many years. We had one week in the 90’s and I was out hammering in it. Last weekend rode 100 in 85 degree heat and completely bonked. I gotta fine tune ASAP. 30 days to go!

Hey Ryan – We do that section 2 times.
The heat here in August is Africa hot. Last year it was a freak of nature with temps in the 80’s. If the temps hold true to the last 5 years that I have been here I am expecting temps in the 90s with high humidity.

I’m screwed. I have never taken more than 2 Saltstick per hour and have no idea how my body will react to 90+ degree heat in humidity. I’ll figure it out, hopefully not the hard way.
